Job Description:

Controls & Instrumentation Technician

Must install, maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate plant instrumentation and control devices. Must perform a variety of duties including repair, calibration, testing and maintenance on electrical/electronic equipment, instruments, and components. Must perform corrective and preventive maintenance tasks related to production and utility equipment.

Controls: Consists of hardwired electrical control and safety circuits, HMI, VFD’s, Servo, PLC’s and associated I/O and various other control devices used throughout the plant.

Instrumentation: Consists of several types of analog and discrete sensors (e.g. pressure, position, level, temperature, etc.), analog and digital metering devices (e.g. mass flow, scales, metal detectors, etc.) and various other instrumentation devices used throughout the plant.

C&I Technicians should become proficient with software, hardware and instrumentation used throughout the plant.

Software: PLC software- RSLogix500, RSLogix5& RSLogix5000,

            Servo software- GML, Ultraware, UltraMaster, Compumotor MA6000

Communication software-RSLinx

HMI software- PDS, Panelbuilder32, Panelbuilder1400e, RSView Machine Edition, RSView32, Uticor and various other equipment specific software.

Hardware: PLC’s- SLC500, PLC5, FlexLogix, CompactLogix & ControlLogix

Servos- A/B 1394, A/B Ultra 100, A/B Ultra 3000, A/B Kinetix 6000, Compumotor

Variable Frequency Drives- A/B 160, A/B 1305, A/B 1336 +&+II, Powerflex4, 40,400, 70 & 700

PC’s and various other hardware, located throughout the plant.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Maintains, calibrates, and repairs plant instruments and control devices. Performs preventive maintenance and regular maintenance of plant instrumentation and control devices. Performs troubleshooting, calibration, and repair of industrial control systems and metering devices used throughout the plant.   Maintains records of maintenance, calibration, and repair activities, to include maintaining currency of as-built drawings. Maintains records of changes made to equipment programming and keeps files current on all programming terminals. Procures parts; maintains inventories of required stock levels, and keeps current records of stock inventories. Assists in the upgrade of existing electric/electronic controls, instrumentation, and metering systems. Follows established safety and environmental policies and procedures, and promotes continuous improvement of safety and environmental performance in the workplace. Uses and promotes the use of a computerized maintenance management system. Supports and assists mechanics in the performance of their duties. Provides electrical and electronic training to mechanics as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Possesses a thorough understanding of all Company policies, including GMP’s and safety policies.
  • Effectively communicates with others.
  • Possesses the ability to read, write, and comprehend English.
  • Possesses the ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Must obtain proficiencies with PLC, Servo and HMI software to perform downloading, uploading and troubleshooting of equipment.
  • Ability to maintain current and accurate records of work performed.
  • Must have good understanding of electricity and electronics.
  • Ability to operate a variety of electrical and electronic test equipment.
  • Knowledge of computerized maintenance management principles as related to supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
  • Ability to calibrate, test and maintain a variety of electrical and electronic devices.
  • Must possess the ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to operate digital keyboards, digital metering devices, calibration equipment, oscilloscopes, soldering equipment, and small hand tools.
  • Ability to monitor/interpret computer displays, digital metering, calibration equipment, and electronic and industrial control devices.
  • Must possess the ability to read and interpret schematics, drawings, and blueprints.

Education and experience required:

Education:

  • Prefer Technical Engineering Degree in Related Field or Equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required.

Successful completion of required computer based skills test.

Experience (Years/Type):

  • Prefer 3 to 5 years experience.
