Job Description:

Improve product emulation and reduce quality attribute variation ensuring compliance to specifications for raw materials, in-process product, and finished product.  Oversee the plant Food Safety Program in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practices.  Oversee and coordinate SQF Certification system and Food Safety Plan for FSMA compliance.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Serve as main SQF Practitioner/Expert.
  • Oversees the development and implementation, review, verification, validation, and maintenance of the SQF System.
  • Communicate to relevant personnel all information essential to ensure the effective implementation and maintenance of the SQF System.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors quality assurance and food safety programs.
  • Serves as lead Preventative Control Qualified Individual (PCQI) for Food Safety Plans.
  • Oversees HACCP programs, Quality and Food Safety Plans, and related prerequisite programs including, but not limited to: formula control, mock trace and recall, consumer complaint management, GMPs, sanitation, pest control, allergen, environmental microbial control, sanitation effectiveness, calibrations, document control, regulatory compliance, SPC, kosher, corrective and preventative actions, and verification and validation programs.
  • Serves as the key plant contact for quality and food safety regulatory agencies
  • Develops professional relationships with plant leadership, employees, platform Q & FS personnel, R&D, suppliers, regulators, and auditors to ensure enterprise food safety and quality strategies are implemented.
  • Manages and supports R&D plant tests and/or projects that qualify new ingredients, formulas, or processes.
  • Interface with Enterprise R&D and other plants to drive process improvement through improved capabilities, tighter specifications, and compliance to specifications.
  • Manages formulation system and assures appropriate controls are in place to meet label declarations.
  • Leads during Regulatory audits (including Kosher), 3rd party Inspections, Corporate audits, and Customer visits.
  • Represents the plant’s Q & FS group as needed on special projects, process improvement efforts, and supplier initiatives.  
  • Works with platform Q & FS personnel to implement division and company food safety initiatives.
  • Provides direction and guidance to facility during quality and food safety issues to assure product is appropriately protected and root cause, corrective and preventative actions are identified and implemented.
  • Monitors and provides monthly reporting on key quality and food safety measures and leads efforts to drive continuous improvement.  
  • Investigates consumer/customer complaints, identifies appropriate corrective action, and provides professionally acceptable written resolution as needed to the platform Q & FS group and Customers.
  • Analyze Quality, Food Safety, and Consumer Complaint data for trend analysis and to identify needs for improvement projects.
  • Serves as technical resource to production.
  • Drives the incorporation of SPC techniques, providing training as needed.
  • Identify resources and training necessary to comply with all quality and food safety systems.  Provide training as needed.
  • Inform Management of any processes which become non-compliant with specified requirements and ANY Safety, Food Safety, or Quality related issues.
  • Responsible for following all plant rules, Safety requirements, and Good Manufacturing Practices.

  • Serves ad Quality Pillar Lead for Performance System
  • Understands and incorporates Continuous Improvement methods to reduce variation.
  • Communicates compliance levels to groups on a shift, daily, weekly, and /or monthly basis.
  • Communicates customer feedback to plant management and employees.
  • Coordinates product quality related customer visits.
  • Determines the disposition of Non-conforming materials, equipment, and product.
  • Interfaces with the Divisional Quality & Food Safety Group and assures alignment and compliance to the TreeHouse policies and procedures.
  • Must be flexible regarding hours of work as this position may be required on off-shifts.
  • Ability to be on-call as needed or to be called into work with minimal notice.
  • Provides back-up support in the absence of the Quality Team Leaders for Food Safety, QA Lab, and Sanitation and the Production Team Leader for Vitamin Premix.

  • Directly manages two Quality Team Leaders for Food Safety and Quality Assurance Lab.  Manages Production Team Leader for Vitamin Premix.
  • Indirectly manages 8-9 QA Lab Technicians, Quality Team Leader for Sanitation, 5-6 Sanitation Quality Technicians and 5-6 Vitamin Premix Quality Technicians, plus various temporary employees
  • Oversees and manages department budget of >$1.5 million
  • This position mainly impacts the plant, however, can have numerous interactions and impact with any TreeHouse plants.

WORKING RELATIONSHIP:  (State types of contact required, both inside and outside the company.  Describe type of supervision given and received.)


  • Must maintain cordial relationships with all departments in the plant as well as with corporate, regulatory, and third party agencies.
  • Internal – At the plant interacts with all departments along with plant management and supervision.  Also interacts with platform support groups for Q & FS, R&D, Purchasing, Sales, and IT.
  • External – Suppliers, trade customers, government regulators, laboratories, trade groups, and certification and auditing firms.
  • The position reports directly to the Sr. Director of Quality & Food Safety – Meals Division
  • This position is backed up by the plant Quality Team Leaders

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Describe what physical demands will be placed upon the individual in terms of lifting, pushing, pulling, etc.)


  • Frequent use of computer
  • Ability to walk, climb, bend twist and lift 50 lbs. in a manufacturing environment
  • Occasional climbing steps and ladders and, on occasion, heights reaching 20-30 ft.
  • Occasional to frequent travel required

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:



Education:



  • BS Degree in Food Science, Microbiology, or related field.
  • PCQI and HACCP Certified from a nationally/internationally recognized and accredited training firm.
  • Ability to obtain SQF Practitioner/Expert Certification within 6 months of employment.

Experience (Years/Type):


  • 5-7 years of experience in Quality Management or Food Safety.
  • A strong background in statistical process control is required.  Experience with grain processing is a plus.
  • Other capabilities include strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Previous experience in Food Manufacturing environment.
  • Direct experience with GFSI certification schemes (SQF, BRC, etc.) is preferred.
  • Must have the ability to coach and train on continuous improvement related programs.
  • Efficient computer skills; strong knowledge of Microsoft Office and SharePoint are required.  Familiarity with web-based programs preferred.  Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Excel and PowerPoint, and Access knowledge preferred.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills, along with supporting technical writing skills, and verbal and written communications skills.
  • Must have the ability to influence change, and the willingness to spend time in the plant with team members during all shifts.
