Job Description:

Job Description: Lead and manage the design/plan/validation and implementation of new packaging technologies, line extensions, package/product improvement and technical service for Sturm Foods that meet product offering requirements.  Work closely with Engineering, Marketing, Operations and suppliers to ensure packaging objectives are met and implement effective strategies to optimize packages.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Plan, organize, coordinate and/or lead the development and commercial implementation efforts for key packaging projects.
  • Influence project direction by providing technical input through the planning and decision-making process.
  • Provides technical expertise in primary discipline, keeping abreast of technical developments and proposes projects to capitalize (cost savings, innovation, material science, and quality improvement projects).
  • Oversee development of packaging specifications, in-process control points and establish testing requirements and operating guidelines.  Provide complete, accurate specifications to help ensure the optimal execution of packaging projects.
  • Lead technical expertise on cross-functional project teams and technical oversight of internal and external manufacturing starts-ups and ongoing technical service.
  • Perform solid root cause analysis and technical problem solving to issues with current packaging structures, materials or processes and good technical design practices on new designs to ensure success the first time rather than large iterative trial and error processes.
  • Conduct validation of packaging equipment, packaging validation, packaging development, selection of sampling plans for packaging testing, and in-process controls.  Support and manage process validation activities from a planning and technical perspective.  Utilize technical expertise to ensure success upon launch.
  • Manage/mentor junior level packaging professionals.
  • Design, execute and analyze experimentation.
  • Supports, coordinates and conducts trials and startup of new products, cost reduction projects, and QA/Ops improvement projects.
  • Ensures all activities in compliance with established safety standards and Good Manufacturing Procedures (GMPs).

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities (List all required):

  • Packaging/Engineering Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.  Proficient in providing cross-functional team leadership and technical project management.  Broad-based technical proficiency with highly evolved tactical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints.  Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups and/or boards of directors.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
